Breaking news: Man Utd have Zinedine Zidane appointment endorsed as Glazers contemplate managerial change
Manchester United have been tipped to go after
Zinedine Zidane as the Glazers consider sacking
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Manchester United would be right to consider
Zinedine Zidane as a replacement for Ole Gunnar,
it has been claimed. The Frenchman has been
strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford over
the past few days, especially given his availability.
And with the Glazers considering a change at Old
Trafford, a move for the 49-year-old has now been
endorsed.
Yet the Red Devils are currently stuck in a rut
under the Norwegian, having lost six of their last
12 matches.
United have been battered by Leicester and
Liverpool, outplayed by Manchester City and
stunned by the likes of Aston Villa and Young
Boys during that time.
With results not good enough, Zidane has
emerged as a possible candidate to take over.
And former Crystal Palace star Darren Ambrose,
talking to talkSPORT, believes both Zidane and
Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers would be good
options to go after.
“But to win three Champions Leagues in
a row... it doesn't matter what squad you have,
you have to have the opportunity and you are
classed as an elite manager if you can do that,
whether it is Barcelona, Real Madrid or whoever
it may be.
"I would love to see Zidane come to Manchester
United, come to the Premier League and see
what he can do.
"He can't do much worse."
While United appear to be interested in
Zidane, however, any appointment is far
from straightforward.
Firstly, because it would mean Solskjaer losing
his job.
While results and performances have been
abysmal, there’s still a section of the board
who want to see the 48-year-old turn things around.
Secondly, due to the fact Zidane would reportedly
prefer to take the France job.
And, lastly, because he’s in no hurry to return
to management having been left exhausted by
his final season at Real Madrid.
As well as Zidane, Rodgers has emerged as
a target.
But the Northern-Irishman has made it clear
he’s happy at Leicester, where he’s won the
FA Cup and Community Shield trophies over the
past year.
Mauricio Pochettino is the third candidate
but the Argentine is currently working with
Paris Saint-Germain in France.
Likewise Erik ten Hag, who is working wonders
at Ajax with limited resources at his disposal.
Solskjaer, meanwhile, has been urged to bring
in some experienced coaches by former England
boss Sam Allardyce in order to save his job.
“You just have to look at his hair,” he said.
“Ole can only get through it with his staff and then
by putting the players on the right track.
“Your staff need to be right on top of their game.
“We get all the criticism and all the praise
as managers, but if you haven’t got the right staff
… the success I had, I couldn’t have done it without
my staff.
“I can’t believe I’ve still not got a total silver fox.
People think I dye mine, but I don’t. I should
have been a silver fox about 10 years ago.
“My advice to Ole is I would shut everything down
from the inside, which is almost an impossible
task.
“But to focus internally and keep the outside
influences away from everybody.
“Focus and really find a way out of it with
your staff. Ole’s staff are never more important
than they are now.
“Ole can only get through it with his staff and
then by putting the players on the right track.
You need your staff need to be right on top of
their game.”
