Breaking news : Ralf Rangnick explains why Manchester United will not make Raphael Varane mistake again, he also reveals his perfect defender..
Eric Bailly started for Man United but
did not finish the win over Burnley, whereas
Scott McTominay started the game carrying
an injury and finished it.
Ralf Rangnick is hopeful Victor
Lindelof will be free from isolation for
Manchester United's home game against
Wolves on Monday.
Lindelof contracted Covid-19 last week
but has assured supporters he is 'fine'
and Rangnick said the defender is showing.
United recalled Eric Bailly to the squad
from an airport in Spain, where he was
waiting to fly on to link up with his Ivory
Coast teammates for the Africa Cup
of Nations.
Bailly was absent from the squad against
Newcastle on Monday but started
in the 3-1 win over Burnley at the expense
of the rested Raphael Varane, who replaced
the injured Bailly in the second-half.
Rangnick was conscious of overplaying
Varane so soon after his return from a
hamstring strain as Varane sustained
the injury in his second start back from
a thigh injury in November.
"In the first instance, I hope Victor
could be back by then," Rangnick said
of the Wolves fixture. "Under normal
circumstances, if the next Covid test is
negative he should be able to come back
for this game. He has no symptoms so
we shouldn't have any physical [
Problems for that game.
"Eric had already left, actually, four days
ago for the Africa Cup of Nations but
he was still in Spain, so we asked him to
come back and I think he did well.
"Apart from the mistake for the goal
we conceded today it was a very good
performance by Eric, very concentrated
, very focused.
"With Rapha, I was thinking about playing
him today but last time that happened
after his muscle injury he was then out for
another couple of weeks and we didn't want
to make that mistake again, so I decided
to have him on the bench."
Rangnick only decided to start man of the
match Scott McTominay at two o'clock
on Thursday afternoon as the midfielder
is nursing an ankle injury.
McTominay sustained the injury in the
draw at Newcastle but recovered to score
United's opening goal against Burnley
and was the standout performer.
"We only decided this afternoon at
two o'clock that he would play as he had
some problems with the ankle contusion
he suffered at Newcastle," Rangnick
explained. "So it was good to have him
available and in the team.
"At half-time, our team doctor told
me he will be struggling in the second-
half with regard to the level of pain, so
it was very important to have him in the
team, and in the end, he could play
92 or 93 minutes.
"He was a very important player for
us today. We played in a 4-4-2 defensively
and a 4-2-4 offensively, and therefore
it was important to have him and
Matic as the two sixes playing next
to each other."
